This textbook is organized in three broad sections. The first section (Chapters 1–4) establishes the scientific foundation: the nature, classification, and physiological roles of the major nutrient groups — macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and water. The second section (Chapters 5–8) applies these foundations to human nutrition across the life cycle and to therapeutic dietetics — the dietary management of specific diseases and clinical conditions. The third section (Chapters 9–10) addresses community nutrition and the public health systems through which nutrition knowledge is applied at the population level. Appendices at the end of the book provide reference tables for practical use: the nutritive value of common Indian foods (ICMR tables), Recommended Dietary Allowances for Indians, food exchange lists for diabetics, and normal clinical and biochemical reference values. A comprehensive glossary defines all key terms in alphabetical order. The bibliography lists primary sources, authoritative reviews, and recommended reading for students who wish to pursue topics in greater depth.
